ABOUT NOELEEN
I am a full time artist living and working in Kommetjie, on a peninsula between the mountains and the ocean at the tip of Africa. Living in this environment provides great inspiration for visual expression and is the inspirational source of most of my artworks and ideas. I devote my time to both teaching printmaking classes and workshops and to art-making for exhibition.
In 2013 I completed a degree in conceptual visual art and turned from a career in Graphic Design to being a full time artist.
Printmaking is my preferred medium, nourishing my intrigue for both mark-making and texture where I enjoy the excavation of an etching plate as much as the layering of tone and line on a monotype or drawing. As the image emerges from the plate, I find there is an ongoing balancing act between the artwork and the idea, and my sense of self as the artist.
As a South African artist, I am inspired by the land in both a geographical as well as a spiritual sense. Experiences and observations of land/scape and a sense of place, often underpin my artwork, with sometimes abstract and symbolic imagery giving a deeper sense of meaning to the work.
I engage with the landscape, through mapping and aerial perspectives alluding to liminal or in-between spaces, and offset these with more intricate imagery of flora and immediate environmental issues.
My intrinsic and enduring desire is to share my passion for the joy of art-making through the etching classes and printmaking workshops that I offer, as well as exhibiting my ideas and imagery in the artworks I create as an overflow of this gift.
